The Education and Care Services Regulations stipulate in section 90, that every service has a policy which sets out how it manages medical conditions which a child attending the service may have.  We have a policy which follows the laws in relation to children with medical conditions.

What is a Medical Condition:

The term medical condition includes any doctor diagnosed illness such conditions including asthma, diabetes, anaphylaxis, kidney disorders, allergies cystic fibrosis, back injury, cancer, hepatitis, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and HIV/AIDS.

An INTOLLERANCE is NOT a medical condition.

How Does OHSC Manage such a condition?

Firstly, no child will ever be discriminated against because of any medical conditon and everything will be done to foster an environment of inclusion and equity.  Our staff are trained in First Aid, CPR and anaphylaxis management to ensure any medical emergencies are managed in the correct way.

Our policy and the Education and Care Services Regulations, stipulate that a child who has a medical condition must:

  • Declare the condition on their enrolment form and ensure all correct emergency contact details and alternatives are included on their enrolment form

  • Provide a medical management action plan for your child (less than 1 year old).  Your doctor can provide you with this.  Not sure what this is?  Have a look at National Asthma Council Australia, they have versions you can complete and take to your doctor.

  • Approve the use of the St. Kevin’s photo record to put up on the wall (in the OHSC office) for easy identification of your child and their condition.

  • For those who have annaphylaxis: Always bring their prescribed adrenaline auto-injection device with them when attending OHSC.  THIS IS NOT NEGOTIABLE.  The easiest way to manage this is to provide OHSC with their own auto immune device to store at the service.

  • Complete a St Kevin's OHSC "Risk Minimisation & Communication Plan for Medical Conditions".  This document details your families unique needs and helps OHSC support you and manage the medical condition.

PLEASE NOTE:  You are unable to attend OHSC until all this information has been received, reviewed by the Educators and any changes made to the program thave been completed.

What if my Child Can Self Administer their Own Medication?

This is the usual practice for school aged children in certain circumstances eg asthma.  That is fine, but we still require an emergency management plan to ensure it is being administered correctly.
